Ever wander through the Hong Kong Pavilion at JCK Las Vegas and wonder how it all came together? Meet Wings Cheung, general manager of the Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers Association (HKJMA) and key player in making the pavilion a reality at JCK Las Vegas. Sponsored by HKJMA, this neighborhood houses the largest overseas collection of Hong Kong–based jewelry industry vendors outside of Hong Kong. You’ll find finished jewelry, loose gemstones, watches, supplies and equipment, and more.
For some behind-the-scenes insight and a hint of what’s in store at the Hong Kong Pavilion this year, we spoke with Cheung.
First, tell us about your work with HKJMA.
Wings Cheung: Being the general manager of the association, my primary responsibility is to promote Hong Kong jewelry and the best interests of 400-plus corporate members.
What is your role in bringing international exhibitors to JCK Las Vegas?
WC: HKJMA is appointed as the sole agent and manager for the Hong Kong Pavilion, which is the largest overseas hub for the show (outside of the Hong Kong event). We provide a turnkey—hassle-free—solution to our exhibitors so they can concentrate on products with nothing else to worry about.
What is the process for finding new designers to bring to the Hong Kong Pavilion? How do you choose who to reach out to—and do brands reach out to you?
WC: We organize the JMA International Jewelry Design Competition each year and welcome entries worldwide. Of course, we’re overwhelmed by local designers here in Hong Kong. All the winning pieces, images, and information will be on display at the show, and occasionally we receive inquiries or emails from brands asking for referral of particular product or materials.
What are some of the trends you anticipate seeing out of the Hong Kong Pavilion this year?
WC: We are bringing more than 160 companies to the show, so there are lots of eye-catching pieces to draw buyers’ attention. There are many small pieces created to express people’s emotions and their appreciation of nature, including different shapes and creatures, from bees to birds and more.
There’s a lot for visitors to see and do at JCK Las Vegas. Why would they benefit from visiting the Hong Kong Pavilion?
WC: Hong Kong exhibitors are well-known for offering exquisite design with very reasonable prices. Besides the product quality, we offer excellent communication, punctual delivery, and comprehensive after-sales services and support.
Finally, what are you looking forward to most at JCK Las Vegas this year?
WC: I look forward to witnessing show business in action, from writing up orders and generating leads to new product presentations, networking, and PR-related functions. Smartphones and other tech can’t match the aesthetic aspect of our industry, where we still anticipate seeing and touching real pieces, along with warm in-person greetings from familiar faces and handshakes with wonderful new friends.
