The 7th annual Rings of Strength will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at a new location, The Venetian Las Vegas. Since 2013, more than $300,000 has been raised through the event to help children in need. Participants can choose to walk, run or bike, and even attend a yoga class, all while raising funds for children in need.
We are very proud to have JCK’s very own, Lars Parker-Myers, Account Executive for JCK Las Vegas, be an active participant and advocate in Rings of Strength every year. We caught up with Lars to find out more about the program, what it means to be part of the event, how you can donate and more.
How long have you been involved with the Jewelers for Children Rings of Strength 5k run?
Since 2014 – one year after it started.
What does it mean to you to be part of such an impactful event every year?
It’s the least I can do to support a very necessary cause!
The event raises money for children in need – tell us more about the cause!
The money we raise goes to our charity partners: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, the Make-A-Wish® America, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the National CASA Association, Make-A-Wish® International, and the Santa-America Fund. Along with other fund-raising efforts the support JFC has received has allowed for more than 1,825 children to be granted wishes in the U.S. and more than 12,000 to have their wish granted in India. More than 18,600 children in foster care have been helped with the support from the jewelry industry and more than 125,000 women have received support at clinics in developing countries. Our support has also provided for a bone marrow transplant unit, a chair in Genes and Genetic therapy and a stem cell transplant laboratory, all providing for hundreds of children to be treated for deadly cancers.
How did you find out about Rings of Strength and what made you initially drawn to being involved?
I heard about the event from industry friends who took part in the inaugural event in 2013 so I immediately signed on for 2014 because it sounded like a fun event for a worthy cause.
What would be your advice to someone interested in becoming involved in a charitable event or program?
Get involved at any level, small or big. Any amount of participation is better than none!
Do any of your friends or family members participate with you?
A lot of my industry friends participate – it’s one of the great things about the event!
How has the event evolved over the years?
The event has grown over the years and we added a biking option, and more recently a yoga option! This year we will have a new route for the run since the event was only ever held down at the other end of the strip. For anyone participating, the meet-up location is outside the Doge’s Palace by the little footbridge in front of the Venetian – hope to see you there!
