Alishan Halebian is a self-taught goldsmith pursuing his own vision in jewelry. Alishan‘s Armenian heritage brings the philosophies of two world cultures, East and West together, which burst into creative expression of style in his distinctive collections. In his designs, this also creates notably individual characteristics and emotions, confronting line and form. His contemporary designs, merged with classical art elements bring exquisite style to his jewelry collection.
Alishan makes his jewelry for a sophisticated wearer; strong, accomplished, appreciates graceful beauty and elegance, a person with confidence, style and taste. We caught up with him to hear more about his design process.
How did your journey in the jewelry industry begin?
In 1970, I moved to Los Angeles from Armenia and along with going to college for art classes I started working in the jewelry district. I was studying ceramic art and design in Armenia. The jewelry district and a career in jewelry was not inspiring at the time in downtown Los Angeles, and I was not interested in jewelry until I discovered German and Swiss metal smith artists, whose artistry in their designs inspired me.
What was the initial inspiration for your brand?
My work is my brand and my brand is my work. Inspiration in my work is constant.
What else inspires you when designing?
Inspiration is the source of my creative work like gravity. Music, in particular, inspires me.
Can you give us an idea of your design process?
Ideas start in my mind and then go on paper. Pencil and paper have always been the best way to express my designs. Modern technology tools are a new addition for me and I utilize them in certain designs.
How long does it typically take to create a piece of jewelry?
Every piece of jewelry in a collection requires lot of time and concentration. Each piece varies on production time. Many of our pieces are fabricated or are a combination of fabrication and casting.
How would you describe your brand using only three words?
Expressive, creative, musical.
You have a number of different collections. Do you have a personal favorite?
In particular, I don’t have one single favorite piece. Usually every new piece that I am working on becomes my favorite.
How about a favorite piece?
I have not created it yet. It is coming… My personal favorite piece is still in my mind.
Tell us about the collections you showcased at Luxury 2019.
At every show, we introduce at least 35 to 50 new pieces. We work very hard to present valuable, new, fresh designs to our customers. We have added to our large men’s and fashion collections. All new designs were very well received and our show was successful. I was also the First Place Winner of Luxury Design Award in the Color Gemstone Category.
Are you partial to any particular stones or hues?
I love color and decide on particular gemstones and hues depending on design. Or, if I have a beautiful and expressive gemstone, I design around it.
What do you think sets your jewelry apart from other companies that specialize in fine jewelry?
Being new all the time and, service, service, service…
Have you noticed a shift in consumer attitudes since the start of your brand?
Yes, of course. Change happens constantly. The consumer is more informed and prepared in this information age. The purpose of jewelry is different for the new generation and we have to consider the demands and adjust our approach.
How do you describe your target audience?
Our jewelry is made for people that appreciate our approach to design, craftsmanship and quality.
What was your favorite part of Luxury 2019?
There were many aspects of Luxury 2019 that we appreciated—the helpful staff, friendly show organizers and hard work to bring the best retail customers to the show.
