Design of the Times

JCK Tucson is almost here! In addition to gems of the mineral kind, it offers discovery and connection with gems of a different kind: the artists and other people of the industry. It’s powerful when we get together IRL (in real life) to explore new aesthetics, find new talent, and reconnect with old friends. There is a real community at JCK Tucson waiting to be discovered! So Young Park Studio I have been an admirer of So Young Park’s jewelry work for a long time. She has a way of challenging your perception of what fine jewelry looks like. Her jewelry is…

Design of the Times: Brandon Holschuh & Ron Hami

Design of the Times

JCK Tucson is not that far away! I can hardly wait for the juicy gems, desert vistas, and beautiful jewelry! The artists represented are so interesting and so varied, it will be like a veritable gallery of emerging and established talent. Brandon Holschuh Brandon Holschuh creates small sculptures from jewelry (and actual large sculptures), with layer upon layer of metal colors and textures, and the subtle gleam of gemstones. Design of the Times

As the December days get ever shorter, I’m daydreaming about sunny, warmer days in Tucson. Elizabeth Garvin Elizabeth Garvin took a fateful metalworking class in college, and had an epiphany: She recognized that with precious metal, she would never learn it all, or run out of inspiration to create. She made jewelry her career, starting with a bench in…

Design of the Times

JCK Las Vegas starts in a matter of days!  I have two more jewelry designers making waves with distinctive design on my list to visit in the Design Center.  Meet Kalee Sholdt and Rona Fisher, resident designers who create a culture within their companies as well as the industry.  It sounds like they are looking forward to seeing jewelry friends as much as I am! Kalee Sholdt I remember working with Sholdt when I first moved to Seattle and worked for Fox’s Gem Shop: I was so taken with the sculptural quality of the rings. They were striking yet classic and…

Design of the Times

JCK Las Vegas is right around the corner! I’m still finalizing my schedule, scrutinizing line sheets, and wondering if triple-booking is an option. There’s a certain excitement that comes with Jewelry Week Las Vegas. Yes, it can be exhausting. Yes, I have a shoe strategy (#vegasshoes). But most people I talk to genuinely enjoy the time they spend in Las Vegas each year. The people, the camaraderie, the connections, and…the jewelry. It always comes back to the jewelry. Register to attend JCK Las Vegas here. Judi Powers I have had the privilege of knowing Judi Powers for a couple of…
