Bridging the Gap with the Accessories Council

We are excited to welcome the Accessories Council back to JCK for its second year. The Accessories Council is a not-for-profit international trade organization on a mission to stimulate consumer awareness and demand for fashion-accessory products. It sponsors educational seminars, networking and social media events, seasonal trend reports, marketing and advertising co-op initiatives, design and marketing awards for area fashion students, an annual silent auction, and the esteemed black-tie ACE Awards gala, an annual tribute to the leaders of the industry.

The Accessories Council represents over 280 of the biggest brands in the fashion industry and is a must-visit destination at JCK Las Vegas (booth B15143), where you will find Colette Malouf, DEEFINE, GIR, Heather Hawkins, Kamaria, SARDEiRA, and Tashka by Beatrice.

We wanted to get to know the Accessories Council brands a little better before the show, so we asked them all a few questions—check out their responses below!

Colette Malouf

Describe your brand in three words.

Effortless, sophisticated, artistic.

How did your brand get to be what it is today?

While still in college, I dabbled in jewelry-making, selling my one-of-a-kind pieces to trendy boutiques in New York City and Boston. Upon graduation, I got my first job at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan, coinciding with the hair accessory that launched my career known as the Malouf Pouf.

Since then, I’ve grown Colette Malouf into a lifestyle brand, creating pieces that are versatile and encourage personal styling.

What inspires your brand?

Coming from a couture family, I’ve inherited an appreciation for glamour which I juxtapose with the grittiness of New York life.  And while living in New York has shaped my aesthetic, I’m very much inspired by my travels abroad and artists such as Klimt.

What are you most looking forward to at JCK?

The beauty of trade shows is not just meeting new customers but also seeing the exciting new collections from my fellow designers.  Having worked for months on my fall ’17 Noblesse Nocturne collection, I’m eager to see how other brands have interpreted the season.

What is your single favorite accessory trend for 2017?

The runways of fall and resort have shown a new passion for crowns, and I’m especially excited for the high headband.

DEEFINE

Describe your brand in three words.

India, Italy, luxury.

How did your brand get to be what it is today?

Three friends who are always following their dream.

What inspires your brand?

India with an Italian twist.

What are you most looking forward to at JCK?

Showing the collection in Vegas for the first time.

What is your single favorite accessory trend for 2017?

Statement earrings.

How do you see the accessory industry evolving in the next year?

More direct-to-consumer sales.  In the next five years?  Solid digital marketing and presence.

Kamaria

Describe your brand in three words.

Beauty of imperfection.

How did your brand get to be what it is today?

We had no connections or background in the jewelry industry when we started, but we were really motivated to create a profits-for-purpose company to support survivors of campus sexual assault. We quit our jobs and learned the art of jewelry-making from a master jeweler in New York City’s Diamond District. We quickly developed the skills to make every piece by hand ourselves. To further grow the business, we traveled to India, Thailand, Italy, and Hong Kong to work directly with gem cutters, silver production factories, and chain manufacturers.

What inspires your brand?

Our jewelry is designed to embrace the allure of nature’s imperfections by using semiprecious stones, geodes, and artifacts from around the world. Similarly, we want to help survivors of sexual trauma unite over their shared experience and seek out the beauty of an imperfect path. Each piece of jewelry is designed to promote validation, compassion, and inspiration. Our sourcing and production partners believe in our mission and actively support our desire to build a company whose profits serve a higher purpose: to give more voice to survivors of sexual trauma, to remove the obstacles that can prevent their access to higher education, and to create a community of solidarity dedicated to this cause. “Kamaria” means moonlight in Swahili—be the light that changes the tides.

What are you most looking forward to at JCK?

We are so excited to introduce our jewelry for the first time at the JCK show. We have spent the past two years traveling the world to build a sustainable jewelry business and can’t wait to reconnect with our friends from overseas. We look forward to finally meeting all the people behind the brands that have inspired us.

What is your single favorite accessory trend for 2017?

Our favorite jewelry accessory trend is custom-cutting semiprecious stones in organic shapes. The goal of our first line is to create pieces that look one-of-a-kind with stones that naturally vary in color, but have the production capacity to match any quantity or demand. Also, vermeil plating over silver lowers our prices to reach a wider base of consumers who normally can’t afford fine jewelry but would love to invest in a special piece.

How do you see the accessory industry evolving in the next year? In the next five years?

We believe technology is going to create the biggest change in the accessories industry; people will begin to interact with brands more directly, and sales will take place through social media. Also, lab-created gemstones will have a big impact on the trend toward transparent sourcing and pricing; however, we won’t see them become a complete substitute for real stones until there is more innovation in the cutting process, since the labor cost is comparable to that of stones mined from the earth.

SARDEiRA

Describe your brand in three words.

Empowers, inspires, celebrates.

How did your brand get to be what it is today?

A vision filled with integrity, perseverance, passion, commitment, and support, along with a collective and inclusive team of talented individuals and companies.

What inspires your brand?

The beauty of Mozambique, from its natural wonders to its people, their talents, and their customs.  The intention to reconnect humanity with nature, all the while empowering, inspiring, and celebrating humanity at its best—one person at a time.

What are you most looking forward to at JCK?

Creating “all win”relationships.  Memorable customer service begins with the retailers who choose to partner with us.  We are grateful for those we met last year, and are excited to reconnect with them again, as well as meet new ones.

What is your single favorite accessory trend for 2017?

Innovation and quality.

How do you see the accessory industry evolving in the next year? In the next five years?

The shift from what we now refer to as traditional retail environments is accelerating into ever more special spaces.  Fine jewelry customers are eager to make a purchase with meaning and want to make the world a better place, too.

Collectively with retailers, we have the opportunity to be the customers’ partners in fulfilling their wishes with the retail spaces and designs we create.  Our brand’s vision, values, and choice to give back to organizations aligned with the same do simultaneously mirror the values of our partners and customers alike.
